Stage Report

Quick Step-Innergetic's Tom Boonen left Huy in Belgium this morning in Yellow. Many people thought that today would be Tom's first stage win of this year's race. By the time the race reached the finish line in St Quentin back in France it wasn't Boonen but instead Aussie Robbie McEwen powered to the line and his 2nd win of this years race. By taking the win he helped himself to his 10th in the Tour de France and the lead in the green points competition.

Robbie said after the stage that it had went exactly to plan. He said he waited for the last 200m of the stage and then went for it. Went for it he did, easily taking the stage, the green points jersey, and his 10th in the Tour de France.

Robbie later dedicated the stage to his team mate Fred Rodriguez who crashed out yesterday.

How the stage unfolded;

172 riders left Huy at the start today in slightly cooler conditions that the previous couple of stages.

Early in the stage Discovery Channel's Egoi Martinez attacking countered after an attack from the yellow jersey Boonen. Soon after he was joined by Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis), Christophe Mengin (Francaise des Jeux), Cédric Coutouly (Agritubel), and Laurent Lefevre (Bouygues Telecom) leaving 5 riders up front after only 21 km.

Rapidly the gap back to the peloton grew with it reaching 3 minutes 16 km later. Boonen's Quick Step squad set the tempo at the front of the bunch.

By the time the peloton reached the top of the 2nd climb of the day, the 4th cat Cote de Falaen the peloton were already 4'30" behind the leaders. Here Lefevre took maximum points to protect his team mate Jerome Pineau's lead in that competition who had earlier scored maximum points on the first climb of the day.

The gap reached almost 5 minutes by the time the peloton lead by Quick Step reached the feed station at Cerfontaine after 84km.

Ex-Euskaltel rider Egoi Martinez took the first bonification sprint of the day, and more importantly the 6" bonus that came with it. Behind, Quick Step who were still on the front of the main bunch started getting faster and faster and they quickly brought the lead down to 4 minutes.

Again at the second bonus sprint of the day, after 135.5 km, it was Martinez who was 1st ahead of Mengin and Lefevre. At this stage the gap was now down to 3'30" with Quick Step still on the front.

After 189 km Lampre-Fondital came to the front to aid the Quick Step chase and to set up the finish for their rider, Daniele Bennati. This really spelt the end for the break as their lead was now down to only 2 minutes.

The 3rd and final sprint was again taken by Discovery's Martinez who narrowed the gap to Boonen's yellow jersey to only 10 seconds now. 2nd was taken by Lefevre ahead of Mengin this time with the peloton only 1'15" in arrears.

With 12 km remaining of the stage, and the break certain of being caught, British rider and Olympic pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins along with French rider Mengin sat up and waited for the bunch. Martinez, Lefevre and Coutouly continued ahead. With 3 km to go Lefevre attacked his two breakaway companions, dropping Coutouly. It was all in vain though because with 1.5 km remaining of the stage the group was back together setting the scene for yet another bunch sprint.

The Milram squad took them under the 1 km to go mark only to be overtaken by Quick Step. McEwen missing his usual lead-out-man Fred Rodriguez instead used the power and speed of Gert Steegmans to come through up the center of the road and kick for the line 200m from home.

McEwen easily took his 2nd stage win so far in this years race ahead of Isaac Galvez with Oscar Freire 3rd.

First yellow jersey Thor Hushovd who initially finished 4th on the stage was later relegated to the back on the main peloton, 148th place, for irregular sprinting. In the points competition this now drops him down to 5th place on 62 points, 38 beind competition leader McEwen.
