Stage Report

Matthias Kessler, the 27 year old German from the T-Mobile team has won today's 3rd stage of the Tour, finishing at the top of the Cauberg in Valkenberg, Holland. Kessler attacked in the final kilometers of the stage, but unlike yesterday, his well timed effort worked to perfection, arriving at the finishing line 5 seconds clear of his Australian team mate Michael Rogers in 2nd.

Behind Kessler, Tom Boonen was fighting hard for a top placing on the stage and the right to wear the yellow jersey as leader of the race. He finished the stage in 4th place, good enough to put him into the maillot jaune going into tomorrow's 4th stage.

How the stage unfolded;

175 riders rolled out at the start this morning in Esch-sur-Alzette on the 216 km stage with six climbs along the way. The weather again was warm and sunny for the riders for the start at just after midday.

Even though the start was fast it didn't stop the riders attacking. Jens Voigt from the CSC team was the first to make a serious move after only 15 km of racing. He was soon joined by Arrieta of AG2r, Etxebarria of Euskaltel, Laurent of the Agritubel team and Pineau from Bouygues Telecom. At this point there was a slowing of the tempo in the peloton meaning that within 5 km the break had established a lead of 1'30".

With Voigt the race leader on the road he drove the break along. By the first bonus sprint after 35 km they had established a lead of 3'55" with Voigt beating Arrieta and Laurent.

As the quartet shared the pace making at the front on the roads of Belgium, the gap grew to 5'25" after 92 km of racing. By the time they reached the feed station in Trois-Ponts after 122.5 km they had 6'00" on the peloton.

Pineau was having a good day taking maximum points on the first four climbs of the stage which means he will be wearing the KOM jersey tomorrow as leader of that competition.

American rider Fred Rodriguez (Davitamon-Lotto) and Eric Dekker (Rabobank) both hit the deck, crashing out with about 60 km of the stage remaining.

With the break still at 4'30" at Verviers after 157 km, the Crédit Agricole lead bunch were joined by the Rabobank and Quick Step-Innergetic teams to aid the chase. This would spell the end of the break as their lead tumbled. With 27 km of the stage remaining the gap was down to 1'40"

Behind in the bunch one of the favorites, and ProTour leader Alejandro Valverde crashed out. He crashed while in the top third of the peloton retiring with a broken collar bone.

Arrieta started feeling frisky in the lead group and went on a solo attack with 16 km remaining. 9 km later he had built a lead of 1'02" over the chasing bunch with Voigt and Laurent being caught by the chasing peloton.

As the race reached Valkenburg with only 4 km remaining and the lead rider still ahead the Discovery Channel team of George Hincapie came to the front to aid the chase. Arrieta still had a 40" lead at this stage and looked to have a slight possibility of being able to make it to the finish. It wasn't to be though. As Arrieta slowed on the slopes, the chasing riders attacked and got faster. Boogerd accelerated hard with his team mate Freire close behind. Other riders towards the head of the pack were Hincapie dreaming of yellow again, Boonen who also thought of pulling on yellow, and T-Mobile's Kessler.

Kessler, as he did yesterday, kicked hard immediately opening a gap. Philippe Gilbert (Francaise des Jeux) was the only rider able to hang onto the flying German as he lanched his attack. Unfortunately though Gilbert just didn't have enough left as Kessler simply rode away from him.

Winding it up, getting faster and faster to the line the peloton just couldn't catch Kessler and he took the stage win from his team mate Rogers in 2nd who outsprinted Lampre's Daniele Bennati.

Boonen had done enough with his 4th place though to take the leaders yellow jersey going into tomorrow's 207 km stage from Huy in Belgium to St Quentin back in France. Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) who started the stage in yellow finished the stage in 63rd place, 17" behind stage winner Kessler.
