Stage Report

Floyd Landis (Phonak) had the ride of his life to bounce back from the disappointments of yesterday to solo to victory and win the 200.5 km stage by 5'42" from Carlos Sastre (CSC). Now Landis is only 0'30" down in the general classification in 3rd place.

Overall the yellow jersey of Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) just managed to hang onto his lead. He now leads 2nd placed Carlos Sastre by only 0'12".

Now coming into the individual time trial on Saturday the race is completely wide open with the top 5 riders on GC still capable of taking the title of Tour champion.

The whole race is still to play for and thanks to the solo win of Landis today after being at the head of the race all day, he again is a potential champion. Maybe now Landis has the best possibility for the overall win in Paris this coming Sunday.

Floyd Landis said on the Phonak website after his win today, "After my defeat yesterday I had something to prove today. I couldn't allow my team to work hard for three weeks and then destroy it all in one day. I came here to win the Tour de France. The Tour win is the only thing that interests me. After today, I am very, very happy - and also very optimistic. I have faith in my time-trial abilities. But I have to continue fighting because whoever wants to win this Tour has to give his all." Who would bet against him now?

2nd placed Sastre said, "Already on the first climb I could tell that he [Landis] was going to attack. He just took off like an eagle and there was nothing we could do about it. He was way too strong."

Lampre's Damiano Cunego done enough today to move into the lead of the young riders classification and wear the white jersey on tomorrow's stage. He said after finishing 17th on the stage, "Wearing this jersey makes me very happy. Also today I offered a great performance that permitted me to obtain this jersey: I will wear it for two days, and then I will probably give it back to Fothen after the time trial. But at the end of the Tour nothing is so sure: the fatigue can cause surprises."

How the stage unfolded;

146 riders rolled out of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne on the 200.5 km stage to Mozine, the final Alpine mountain stage of this years Tour.

5 climbs were on route today for the stage, the final coming only 12 km before the finish in Morzine. The 5 climbs were the Category 1 Col des Saisies after 82.5 km, the Category 2 Col des Aravis at km 109, the Category 1 Col de la Colombière after 134 km, the 3rd Category Côte de Châtillon-sur-Cluses having covered 162 km of racing, and finally the Col de Joux-Plane coming after 188.5 km. The Col de Joux-Plane is a Hors Category climb and memorably known as the only climb in Lance's 7 Tour wins which he cracked on! It's an 11.7 km climb at 8.5 %.

As usual in this Tour de France the first break was launched straight after the start. There was 6 riders present but unfortunately for them, team CSC felt the break was too dangerous and never let them obtain any real advantage. Soon the were reeled back in.

After 12 km it was time for another break. Discovery's Padrnos, O'Grady (CSC), Posthuma and Weening (Rabobank), Sinkewitz (T-Mobile), ex-KOM leader De la Fuente (Saunier Duval), Gilbert (FdJ), Paolini (Liquigas), Garate and Tankink (Quick.Step), Righi (Lampre-Fondital), Halgand and Le Mevel (Crédit Agricole), and Auge (Cofidis).

Before long though the 14 man group had become 11 with 3 riders sitting up and returning to the main group. The riders who dropped back were De la Fuente because of being a threat for the KOM title, and the two Rabobank riders who were no doubt told to come back and look after their GC rider, Denis Menchov who started the stage in 6th place overall.

So, with 11 riders ahead of the peloton, none dangerous overall, there was no reason to chase. After 30 km of racing they had built a reasonable lead of 1'30" as they rode towards the first climb of the day.

Before long the yellow jersey of Pereiro was already being tested when Landis and Klöden made a move. They were soon followed by the other riders challenging with Evans (Davitamon Lotto), world time trial champion Rogers (T-Mobile), Menchov (Rabobank) and Sastre (CSC) all present.

Landis though was in a determined mood and before long had dropped the others, going on ahead alone while the others decided to drop back to the yellow jersey group and save their energy for later in the stage. A move this early on in the stage looked like complete suicide.

Landis showed that he had recovered from cracking on yesterday's stage and powered his way up the 1st climb of the day, the Col des Saisies, a climb of 14.9 km at 6.4%. Landis rode in his large chain-ring keeping the speed high while up ahead of him, the 11 man group were disintegrating. Before long the 11 had become 7. The 7 remaining in the lead were, Padrnos, Sinkewitz, O'Grady, Garate, Gilbert, Halgand, and Righi.

Halgand took maximum points at the summit of the Saisies but more importantly Landis was at this stage only 3'00" behind the leaders and 3'00" ahead of the yellow jersey group.

Down the decent Landis dropped like a stone showing the bike handling skill's picked up in his mountain bike days.

On the decent the lead group became 11 again with the riders who were dropped on the climb rejoining.

After 97 km of racing as the leaders came through the feed station Crédit Agricole rider Halgand attacked going ahead alone. Only a couple of km's later though Landis had made contact with the remaining riders from the break. He made contact at the start of the 2nd climb of the day, the 5.9 km Col des Aravis (average 7.1%). Almost immediately Landis, a man on a mission today hit the front. One by one the riders who he had caught started getting dropped, unable to follow the flying American's pace on the climb.

Over the summit Halgand again took maximum points but with Landis crossing the summit in 2nd place only 1'45" in arrears, it was only a matter of time until the Frenchman would again have company.

4 riders reached the bottom of the 3rd climb of the day, the Col de la Colombière after 134 km's, Halgand who had been recaptured, Landis who was doing all the driving, Sinkewitz and Righi. By this stage the gap back to the yellow jersey was 5'30". Caisse d'Epargne led the charge but with only 2 riders to do the chasing they were finding it almost impossible to control the time gap to Landis.

On the Colombière, 7 km from the summit, Landis was forced to make a bike change because of a mechanical problem. Immediately Landis was back on his new bike, straight back to the front, and again, forcing the pace.

There was talk that Landis may well have suffered from heat stroke yesterday. He made no mistake today though and throughout the stage poured bottles of water over his head to keep himself cool. It wasn't just Landis though, many riders in the yellow jersey group pouring water over themselves also, especially with the temperatures even higher than yesterday.

Landis drove over the top of the Colombière with only T-Mobile's Sinkewitz able to hold the American. Halgand crossed the summit one minute behind with the peloton now 8'30" behind.

By the end of the decent the gap had grown to 9'00". With only one Caisse d'Epargne rider left to chase and evident that even when they were chasing the gap continued to grow they switched off. It was at this stage that CSC hit the front with Voigt, Zabriskie, and Vande Velde, lining out their group. With pain clearly visible on the face of Voigt they were soon joined by the T-Mobile squad. Together the two teams drove the chase. They caught O'Grady who before long also joined in the chase in the hope of bringing the time down to launch Sastre for home.

Suddenly the gap started coming down but with 25 km to the finish the lead was still over 7'00".

Landis hit the bottom slopes of the Col de Joux-Plane, unbelievably still looking strong, where he dropped Sinkewitz and continued alone.

The yellow jersey group hit the bottom of the climb with riders immediately getting blasted out the back door. CSC's Alpe d'Huez stage winner Fränk Schleck hit the front with Sastre on his wheel. Immediately everyone looked to be in trouble. Seeing this Sastre accelerated leaving his team mate and going ahead alone attempting to make up time on the yellow jersey and bring back as much time on Landis as possible on the climb.

Christophe Moreau (AG2r) gave chase in the company of Cadel Evans (Davitamon Lotto) Menchov and Boogerd (Rabobank), followed a couple of meters behind by Cunego and Schleck who were in turn a couple of meters ahead of the yellow jersey group which also contained Klöden (T-Mobile) and Dessel (AG2r). 20 km from the end of the stage Evans et al were still 6'00" behind the unstoppable Landis.

Before long Evans was unable to follow the pace of Moreau and started dropping back. Cunego then managed to cross to Moreau, while the yellow jersey, finding his second wind, started setting the pace putting Klöden in trouble.

Over the top Landis led with Sastre crossing the summit 5'08" behind, Moreau at 5'58, Cunego at 6'19, yellow jersey Pereiro with Klöden, Boogerd, Schleck and Zubeldia at 6'52", Evans, Menchov, Sinkewitz and Rasmussen at 7'19", and the group of Dessel with Guerini and Valjavec at 8'20.

Landis powered his way down the decent to the finish reaching this line 5'42" ahead of Sastre and only missing taking the yellow jersey again by 0'30". Maybe Saturday?

Disaster struck for Frenchman Dessel though on one of the corners. He lost it half way down the decent swinging too wide and crashing. Immediately he was back up though and finished the stage in 16th place at 8'49".

So overall Oscar Pereiro retains the lead by 12 seconds going into tomorrow's 18th stage.
